Time to Flutter By the Environmental Nature Center

DateMonday, May 3, 2010 at 11:45AM

A monarch butterfly basks in the sunlight filtering through the Butterfly House's mesh covering.

A monarch chrysalis, one of nature's jewels, looking like a jade pendant with gold inlay. It's a place where monarchs, admirals and painted ladies mingle freely, and the public is invited to visit as well.

It's the Environmental Nature Center's Butterfly House, and monarchs, red admirals and painted ladies are but three of the varieties of winged wonders on show there through the summer. On Saturday, May 1, the ENC held a grand opening that featured crafts, games and food for butterfly fans young and old.

Activities for kids at the grand opening included a ring toss and making handprint butterfly paintings. The nature center is located at 1601 16th St., next to Newport Harbor High School. The Butterfly House will be open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. More information is available at the center's website.

With all the butterflies hatching in our neighborhood this is a great idea for a family trip. I'll be passing this on to all the neighbors to enjoy and learn!
