Newport Beach Police Dept.'s Citizens Police Academy on Thursday evenings, 7 to 10 p.m. Students will learn from the department personnel who are experts in SWAT, K-9, narcotics, patrol operations, traffic laws and firearms. All will participate in practical demonstrations and a ride-along, and receive an academy uniform shirt. Students must live or work in Newport Beach, and must be at least 21 years of age with no felony convictions, outstanding warrants or pending criminal cases. Applications are available in the Newport Beach Police Dept. lobby or from the police department website atwww.nbpd.org. In response to Haiti’s devastating earthquake, the non-profit organization,Ecofficiency.org, will be hosting Communities Helping Communities: Hope for Haiti, a music benefit and art auction at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa beginning at 8 p.m. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event will go directly to Doctors without Borders Haitian relief efforts. Hope for Haiti will feature live performances by local bands Marc B., the Pawnshop Kings, The Knuckles and Emily Saterlee, as well as an art auction with pieces donated by local artists, including the eVocal collaborative. Members of the Orange County Haitian community will also be present, sharing their stories and serving authentic Haitian hors d’oeuvres to attendees. The fundraiser is a 21 years+ event. Tickets are a $15 donation and can be purchased ahead by emailingEcofficiency.org or at the door.
