District releases statement about student's death

DateThursday, March 11, 2010 at 12:03PM

Dear Newport-Mesa School Community,

We are saddened to share with you news of the sudden passing of a fine young Costa Mesa Middle School student.  At approximately 4:30 PM on Wednesday, March 10th, Eric Valdez, an 8th grader at Costa Mesa Middle School suddenly collapsed while playing handball on campus.  Costa Mesa Police Department responded and began CPR.  Eric was transported to the hospital by Costa Mesa Fire Department where doctors could not revive him.  The coroner has determined the cause as an unexpected natural death.

N-MUSD’s crisis response team has been on the Costa Mesa campus all day today and will continue to be present as needed.  Our thoughts are with Eric’s family.  Eric has a sibling that also attends Costa Mesa Middle School and, as a school community, we are committed to doing everything we can to assist the family during this time of tragedy.   We are working with the family to determine their wishes regarding announcement of services.

Please feel free to contact the school office at 714-424-8700 if you have any questions or need any assistance.  For media related inquiries, please contact the N-MUSD Public Information Office directly at 714-424-5070.
